What is a psychiatric condition and who can help?

A mental disorder is characterized by a clinically significant disturbance in an individual’s cognition, emotional regulation, or behaviour.  It is usually associated with distress or impairment in important areas of functioning. There are many different types of mental disorders.

Most Common - expect all practitioners to be able to work with

  • Chronic depressive/anxiety disorders

  • Schizophrenia

  • Bipolar disorder

  • Personality disorders

  • Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) manifesting with predominantly behavioural problems

  • Post-traumatic stress disorder

 

Less Common - these may be exceptions

  • Feeding and eating disorders

  • Somatic symptom disorders
